The development team that works on Joomla has spent the last five years rewriting and debugging the code that Joomla is built on in an effort to add more flexibility and requested features.  This “behind the scenes” code was completely rewritten to allow for future growth and long term viability.  This is the primary reason why a migration is needed to move from 1.5 or 2.5 into Joomla 3.

Primary Consideration: Security

Although 1.5 is a long term release version, it no longer is supported by regular security patches from the Joomla developers.  Joomla releases security patches for its current long term release version.  These security patches protect your Joomla website from hackers and other vulnerabilities.  Since Joomla 1.5 and Joomla 2.5 is no longer supported, the code base naturally becomes more vulnerable since new fortifications are not being applied.

In addition, servers run PHP and SQL to host your website.  Joomla 1.5 uses an older version of PHP and SQL.  So, it requires you to keep an old version running on the server.  In March 2016, we will be forced to update the servers to a technology that no longer will support the older code and it will present a challenge to those who continue to have a Joomla 1.5 site to find a place for hosting.

My Artisan Web will no longer provide security support to Joomla 1.5 or Joomla 2.5 sites.  What does this mean?  If your Joomla 1.5 or 2.5 website is hacked, you’ll be responsible for the financial implications that come with restoring and/or cleaning up the site.  My Artisan Web will provide you with a clean backup of your site from before the hack occurred; however, we will charge at hourly rate ($125/hour) to provide any additional support.  So, it’s important to take into consideration the risks of remaining on a Joomla 1.5 or 2.5 site in relation to purchasing a migration.

Secondary Consideration: New Features

With the release of Joomla 3x, you’ll find a newly designed administrator panel with a number of new features.

  1. Most importantly there is the addition of nested categories and the removal of sections.  This has been something that web developers have wanted for years in Joomla because life is more complex that the Section/Category relationship allows for.  Now you can nest your categories to better organize and deliver your content.
  2. Another massive expansion in Joomla 3x is the addition of new Access Control Levels (or ACL’s).  This will allow you to increase the control you have over who edits what content on your website.
  3. You can now assign one category or article to a particular person which has never been possible in the past.
  4. Other nifty features include:
  • The ability to upload multiple images to your media manager with the browse/upload button
  • The ability to update registered extensions with the click of a button.
  • Improved Workflow – Save and Close, Save as Copy and Save as New in the articles/menus.
  • You can now assign modules right from the menu item
  • Editing modules from the front-end
  • Tagging for enhanced blogging
  • Language Overrides in the Admin Portal
  • Template Overrides Right from the Admin Portal
  • Customized Dashboard and Responsive Too!
